Spurs are yet to be beaten this season, but too many draws could leave their title hopes in tatters.
The Premier League title may well be beyond Tottenham Hotspur this season due to the strength of their rivals, Barcelona legend Gheorghe Hagi has told The Sun.
Spurs are the only unbeaten team remaining in the top flight but have fallen five points off the pace following a run of four consecutive draws, continued in the North London derby at the weekend when Harry Kane netted a contentious penalty after Laurent Koscielny was adjudged to have fouled Moussa Dembele.
Mauricio Pochettino’s youthful charges appeared to have announced themselves as bonafide title contenders when they blew away Pep Guardiola’s hitherto invincible Manchester City last month, though their stalling form has cast doubts on their ability even to replicate last season’s third placed finish with Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal looking better by the week.
Christian Eriksen (below), Erik Lamela and Kane, all key figures as Tottenham showed signs of evolving from a perennial dark horse to pedigree frontrunner last season, have slipped below their usual standards in recent weeks and Hagi believes that they will come up short once again this time around.
He said: “Tottenham have invested in youth the last two or three years, so they now have a good team. Although it’ll be difficult to win the title.”
However, the former Barcelona playmaker insists that Liverpool, City and Arsenal have everything it takes to take first place though, interestingly, he made no mention of Antonio Conte’s resurgent Chelsea.
“Liverpool have made good progress in the last year. They have a good coach. I saw they have quality and enthusiasm.
“Arsenal I think are a very good club and have a good team to win.
“They’ve worked many years to have a good team and I think now they have a good opportunity to win. They have quality and their coach has plenty of experience.
“And City: wherever Guardiola is, everything is possible! He has the capacity to win quickly.”
