Scottish Premiership giants Rangers have three goalkeepers fighting for one position at Ibrox – Jak Alnwick, Wes Foderingham and Allan McGregor.

Jak Alnwick of Rangers saves from Conor Sammon of Partick Thistle during the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Jak Alnwick looked to be on his way out of Ibrox this summer.

The goalkeeper has only played six times in the league since moving to Rangers from Port Vale in January 2017. And, after Allan McGregor sealed his return from Hull City to push Alnwick further down the pecking order, the Express reported that the one-time Newcastle United youngster had his heart set on leaving.

A return to England with Shrewsbury Town, beaten League One finalists last season, looked to be on the cards. But, according to the Sun, the Shrews did not have the finances to pull off a deal.

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha and Jak Alnwick are seen prior to the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

And it now seems more likely than ever that Alnwick’s immediate future is at Rangers after all. Steven Gerrard’s arrival as manager means every player in his squad has a clean slate – and that includes Alnwick.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Gerrard made it clear that he does not have a clear number one in his mind, suggesting that Alnwick will be given the chance to show he deserves the gloves ahead of McGregor and Wes Foderingham.

“Right now they all see themselves as number ones and they have still got time to impress and stake their claim for number one,” the 37-year-old said. “Right now sitting here, I don’t have a number one in my head.

“They have all started very strongly but I know I am going to have to have a tough conversation with one of them in the coming weeks.”

This could be a make-or-break pre-season for Alnwick, however. Should he fail to impress and find himself third in the pecking order when the season kicks off, expect the 24-year-old to have his head turned.
