Rangers raided Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen for their captain Ryan Jack in 2017 but could Graeme Shinnie be Ibrox-bound, too?

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Steven Gerrard has played down speculation linking Rangers with a move for Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie, in quotes reported by the Express.

The 27-year-old midfielder is due to become a free agent in the summer and is therefore able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a rival Scottish Premiership club.

Rangers have been mentioned as a potential destination, with Shinnie also on the radar of Sunderland according to the Scottish Sun.

The Gers famously signed Aberdeen captain Ryan Jack on a free two years ago and they will certainly cause a stir if they repeat the trick in the off-season.

But Gerrard was in no mood to give anything away on Tuesday morning when asked about whether the five-time Scotland international was Ibrox-bound.

“It’s all speculation. It’s part of being the Rangers manager,” Gerrard said.

“Every time I get my media briefing or clips, we are linked with five or six different players.

“I don’t think it’s the right time to be talking about ins and outs. Especially during the season, when the window is shut.”

If there is one position Rangers surely don’t need to strengthen it is central midfield. The Gers boss has a whole host of options to pick from and that is without mentioning Graham Dorrans, who has missed most of the season through injury.

Jordan Rossiter and Greg Docherty are set to return, meanwhile, after impressive loan spells at Bury and Shrewsbury Town south of the border.
