Premier League managers frequently bemoan their cramped fixture lists but they’ve got nothing to worry about compared to their La Liga counterparts.
Real Betis coach Gus Poyet has slammed the scheduling of the La Liga fixture list after his side played two of their opening four games this season on a Friday night, according to Football Espana.
The former Sunderland manager is currently enjoying a three match unbeaten streak in the Spanish top flight after losing 6-2 to Barcelona on his managerial debut for the Beticos (below).
However, Poyet feels his side’s progress is at risk of being undermined by the influence of television broadcasters, with La Liga’s fixtures often staggered across four days to accommodate their UK-based audience.
“The weekends are when football is supposed to be played,” the Uruguayan told reporters, as reported by Football Espana.
“We must excuse the TV broadcasters, but we are a little bit sick of this.”
Fans have frequently protested the La Liga authorities’ decision to schedule top flight games at 9pm local time on a Friday and Monday night, with many arguing that it restricts families with young children from attending games, The Guardian report.
According to the Daily Mail, a grand total of 11 Real Madrid fans travelled to watch Zinedine Zidane’s side (below) take on Granada at 8.30 on Sunday night in February due to the lack of transport available to take them back to the capital after full-time.
