Premier League high-flyers Liverpool lost Emre Can to Serie A giants Juventus, but could he move to La Liga powerhouses Barca or Real Madrid soon?
It is credit to Liverpool’s excellent recruitment that there has been very little talk about Emre Can in the first month of this season.
After prolonged speculation, Can left Anfield in the summer, joining Serie A champions Juventus on a free transfer after his contract expired.
Naby Keita could be seen as something of an upgrade in the centre of the park however, while Brazilian international Fabinho is waiting in the wings after his £43.7 million arrival from AS Monaco.
German international Can, then, has not been missed so far, with Liverpool winning all four of their league fixtures so far in 2018/19. And is yet to start a single league game for Juve either, making three appearances off the bench totalling just 44 minutes of football.
Nevertheless, former Juventus defender Jurgen Kohler still believes that Can is destined for the very top of the world game.
“Emre is the right player for Juve. It’s harder to win titles with Liverpool. With the Old Lady, he has the certainty of playing at a top club,” Kohler, who won the 1995 Serie A title with the Turin giants, told Sport1.
“Emre is now in the prime of his life. Even after a four-year contract, he could move to a Real Madrid or Barcelona. That was definitely worth considering. If you win a few leagues with your club, you will of course become more interesting for other clubs.”
The prospect of Can lining up alongside Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez at Barcelona does not bare thinking about for Liverpool fans. And, while few are missing him yet, he could still be seen as one-that-got-away if he fulfils his huge potential.
