West Bromwich Albion loaned the impressive Jack Fitzwater out to League One Wallsall in the January transfer window.
West Brom have been a bit of a mess at the back of late.
Jonny Evans’ form has dipped alarmingly since those January links with Manchester City and Arsenal, Gareth McAuley’s best days are clearly behind him while winter window addition Ali Gabr has had no impact so far.
Maybe, then, giving a chance to young Jack Fitzwater would have been a good decision. The 20-year-old, West Brom’s 2015 Academy Player of the Year, is instead spending the rest of the season on loan at League One Walsall and he has made an impressive start so far.
Walsall are unbeaten in the four games that Fitzwater has started at centre-half and have kept two clean sheets too.
With Fitzwater’s contract expiring at the end of this season, Walsall fans have already been clamouring for the defender’s loan move to be made permanent on a free, as reported by the Express and Star.
This should really be enough of an indication that he deserves a fresh start and a chance to prove himself at The Hawthorns.
After all, it would be little surprise if Evans departed at the end of the season with a £3 million release clause in his contract upon the event of relegation, per the BBC. Ahmed Hegazi too has been linked with a move away from The Midlands.
At just 20 years of age, Fitzwater has the potential to be the latest star to emerge from West Brom’s impressive academy. and offering a new contract would be a good place to start.
