Jermain Defoe looks set to leave Premier League Bournemouth but will Steven Gerrard’s Rangers make another move for the former England striker?

Tom Eaves of Gillingham's

Rangers would certainly be taking a risk bringing Tom Eaves to Ibrox in January.

According to Sky Sports, the Gers have been watching the in-form Gillingham striker, who cannot stop scoring right now with 13 goals in 25 games in all competitions; a record better than one-in-two.

But whether Eaves is good enough for Rangers is up for debate. The 26-year-old has only ever scored double figures once in his career, and doubts remain about whether the penny has finally dropped or if this is just a fleeting purple patch.

With that in mind, Jermain Defoe must be in Rangers’ sights once again if Steven Gerrard wants to bring a new striker to Ibrox.

He may be 36 and out of favour at Bournemouth but there is life in the old dog yet, and just imagine the impact a natural-born goal-scorer like Defoe could have north of the border. The Sun claims that he is open to leaving the Vitality Stadium and Rangers, who were linked in the summer by the Daily Record, will surely have taken note.

After all, Defoe would be the sort of marquee signing that proves they are serious about challenging Celtic’s domestic dominance. And Gerrard knows just how good he can be, having played with the former Tottenham and West Ham striker for a number of years in the England national team.

Defoe is older than Eaves, has scored less goals and played less games and would probably be more expensive, too. But he also has the experience and the instinct to lead Rangers to glory once again.
