Timothy Castagne’s fine form in Atalanta colours has not gone unnoticed.

The 23-year-old defender enjoyed a fine 2018, impressing in Serie A while forcing his way into the Belgium squad and could now be on his way to Britain.

Celtic have been linked ever since the January transfer window opened with Brendan Rodgers’ understood to be chasing a new right-back. The Daily Record reported that Celtic were planning a £6 million move for Castagne, although Atalanta value him closer to £10 million (Cittaceleste).

According to Alfredo Pedulla, the Hoops are set to face competition from Swansea City, who have already started talks and want to conclude a deal as soon as possible.

But where would Castagne be better off?

Well, Celtic are clearly more in need of a right-back as things stand than Swansea.

After all, the Scottish Premiership champions are crying out for a long-term Mikael Lustig replacement. The Swede is well past his best and has looked like a weak link at times, while Cristian Gamboa and Tony Ralston do not appear to have won Rodgers’ trust.

Swansea, meanwhile, already have an exciting young right-back in their ranks in Wales international Connor Roberts, who has started 24 Championship games this season and scored three goals.

Castagne could be a key first-team player at Celtic or a bench-warmer at Swansea. The decision should perhaps be an easy one.
