Forget Rafael Leao, Tottenham Hotspur could sign Ajax’s David Neres for cheaper

Spurs are looking to raid Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam once again in the summer with David Neres linked with a move to the Premier League.

Rafael Leao might have played just 81 minutes of football in Sporting Lisbon’s first-team but Tottenham Hotspur might have to smash their transfer record if they want to sign the latest thrilling winger to emerge from the club who gave the world Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Nani.

According to Calciomercato, Spurs have joined PSG and Manchester City in tracking the 18-year-old, who scored his first senior goal in a defeat to rivals Porto last time out. Understandably, however, Sporting have put plans in place to ensure they do not lose Leao on the cheap – including a £53 million release clause in a new contract signed to ward off suitors last October.

But if Tottenham want an exciting young winger this summer, they could sign one with far greater first-team experience for cheaper.

Goal stated recently that Spurs are looking to raid Ajax once again in the hope that Brazilian wing sensation David Neres will join Christian Eriksen, Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen in taking that well-worn road from Amsterdam to North London.

Per Yahoo Sports, Ajax made Neres the second most expensive player in the club’s illustrious in January 2017 when he arrived as a little-known 19-year-old from Sao Paolo for £13 million.

It is clear already, however, that the now 21-year-old will make Erik ten Haag’s side a substantial profit one day. He has been one of the standout players in this Eredivisie season, notching 10 goals and nine assists while dazzling the league with his pace and unpredictability.

He has even been likened in some quarters to one Luis Suarez.

So if Spurs are to spend big on one fresh-faced winger this summer, Neres has aced his audition.
