Joe Worrall is on loan at the Scottish Premiership with Rangers after falling out of favour under Aitor Karanka at Nottingham Forest
Suddenly, the future of Joe Worrall at Rangers is in doubt.
The 21-year-old centre-back is on loan at Ibrox from Championship promotion chasers Nottingham Forest but Aitor Karanka has indicated that he plans to look into recalling Worrall when the transfer window opens in a few weeks’ time thanks to an ill-timed injury crisis at the City Ground.
“I need to check what the terms of the contract are,” Karanka admitted in quotes reported by the Scottish Sun.
Now, you can see why Karanka would explore the possibility with a potentially long term injury to club captain Michael Dawson leaving Michael Hefele and Jack Robinson short of competition.
But, from Worrall’s perspective, surely he should be doing everything in his power to stay north of the border instead. Karanka, after all, is clearly not a massive fan of England’s 2017 Toulon Tournament winning skipper, given that Worrall made just a handful of Championship appearances once the Spaniard took over midway through last season.
Rangers counterpart Steven Gerrard, however, has given Worrall regular opportunities in his starting XI with the centre-back edging out Croatian international Nikola Katic in recent weeks.
Wouldn’t Worrall be better off honing his trade at Rangers rather than return to Forest and sit on the bench, only to then fall further down the pecking order once Dawson returns?
