Championship winners Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly want to sign Stoke City’s Joe Allen with the Potters looking likely to be relegated.

On paper, Wolverhampton Wanderers certainly have the raw talent to make a big impression in the Premier League next season after cruising to the Championship title.

Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota, Willy Boly, Helder Costa and co have all proved that they belong at a higher level, after all.

But, despite the array of gifted footballers in Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad, there is a lack of Premier League experience with John Ruddy, Ryan Bennett and Benik Afobe – who is expected to make his loan move from Bournemouth permanent – the only Wolves players who have played regularly in the top flight.

So perhaps this explains why Wolves are reportedly keen to pay big for Stoke City’s Joe Allen this summer.

The tenacious Welshman has been a bright spark in a dreadful season for the Potters. And, if Paul Lambert’s side do go down, he could be given the chance to stay in the Premier League by Wolves, who the Sun claim are willing to offer £20 million.

Allen would not be the most glamorous addition but the report adds that Wolves want an experienced, domestic player and the former Liverpool and Swansea City man has been there and done it in the first division.

Allen would offer leadership and know-how, a commodity that cannot be understated in a side filled with foreign newcomers and players proven at Championship level but not used to the rigours of the Premier League.

£20 million is a lot of money but Allen could be priceless.
