Nigel Adkins took Southampton from League One to the Premier League but could the Hull City manager replace Mark Hughes at St Mary’s?

Could Southampton take one step back to move a few steps forward?

Mark Hughes became the first manager to be sacked by two different Premier League clubs in a calendar year on Monday morning, the former Stoke City boss paying the price for a dreadful start to the new season with The Saints.

Already, the South Coast strugglers have been linked with a number of managers with Sky Sports believing that David Moyes, Nigel Pearson and Craig Shakespeare are all interested in taking over.

But talkSPORT (The Jim White Show, 3 November, 11am) have thrown a very interesting name into the frame – one that Southampton fans will know very well; Nigel Adkins.

TalkSPORT are stating that Adkins is keen to speak with Southampton about replacing Hughes at St Mary’s. And this comes just over eight years after he was first appointed by the club.

Southampton were a League One club at the time but Adkins etched his name into the history books by becoming the first manager to lead The Saints to successive promotions. By the time the former goalkeeper was sacked in 2013, Southampton were a Premier League side.

These days, the 53-year-old Adkins is at Hull City and it remains to be seen whether Southampton would be willing to bring him back.
