Aston Villa spent almost £70 million on new players this season but are closer to the bottom three than the top six.

Alan Curbishley has admitted on the Premier League Daily Show that the pressure is starting to mount on Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce.

The 56-year-old was handsomely backed by ambitious owner Tony Xia in the January transfer window, bringing in seven players including Henri Lansbury, Conor Hourihane and Scott Hogan to vastly improve the options at his disposal.

However, the raft of new signings are yet to manifest themselves as improved results with Villa falling 16 points adrift of the final play-off place after a run of five defeats in six games.

And Curbishley has warned Bruce ahead of Tuesday’s Championship clash with Barnsley that he cannot afford to continue presiding over such a dismal run of form.

“Steve went and invested in the January transfer window, and the board has backed him by bringing in his own players but it hasn’t really happened for him,” the former Charlton Athletic boss said on the Premier League Daily Show, broadcast at 10am on Sky Sports News (14/02).

Fulham coach Alan Curbishley in the stands

“The Villa faithful are getting restless, and he needs to start turning it around. Bruce is a vastly experienced manager but he needs a result tonight to stop the rot.”

Bruce recently lamented the huge upheaval on and off the pitch with a massive influx of players coinciding with a new owner and changes behind the scenes.

However, the black and white states that Villa have spent around £70 million on new players this season alone according to Transfermarkt and, as it stands, they are only seven points above the bottom three.

Therefore, it is no wonder a number of supporters are expressing their concern.
