Claims from the Express and Star that Gary Rowett could replace Darren Moore at West Bromwich Albion have not gone down too well.
The Baggies made the controversial call to sack club legend Moore a week ago, despite the fact that they were sitting fourth in the Championship and seemingly guaranteed a place in the play-offs.
In truth, Moore’s tactics and tendency to play squad pegs in round holes had cast doubt in some quarters about whether he was the man to lead West Brom back to the Premier League, particularly with proven, promotion winners like Slavisa Jokanovic and David Wagner available.
The Telegraph claims that the former Fulham and Huddersfield coaches are among the top targets, along with Preston’s Alex Neil.
The Express and Star, however, have suddenly thrown Rowett’s name into the frame. And it seems he would not exactly be welcomed with open arms in the Black Country.
Once seen as one of Britain’s brightest young coaches, the 45-year-old’s ability has come into question after he failed in the play-offs at Derby before underwhelming in rather spectacular style in charge of an experienced and expensive Stoke City team.
