Fabinho was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford at one stage this summer, and Manchester United fans will certainly be keen to see him there, after his sparkling performance against Tottenham in the Champions League at Wembley Wednesday night.
So that didn’t exactly go to plan. Tottenham’s first Champions League game since 2010/11, after years of fifth placed finishes and Thursday nights in Eastern Europe, ended in acute disappointment with a shock 2-1 defeat at ‘home’ to Monaco. The word ‘Spursy’ comes to mind.
Yet, for all Spurs’ wastefulness in attack and calamitous disregard for defensive basics, we shouldn’t forget that there were two sides playing a game of football at Wembley on Wednesday evening. And, as it goes, one of them played quite well.
Kamil Glik, Andrea Raggi and Jemerson all made crucial interceptions at crucial moments, Bernardo Silva (below) and Thomas Lemar schemed and swerved effectively in the midfield, but it was the deep-lying partnership of Tiemoue Bakayoko and Fabinho that squeezed the Tottenham attack in a pressurised air-lock.
Fabinho, in particular, stood out. The 22-year-old Brazilian signed a new five year contract at the principality club earlier this month to ward of apparent interest what Sky Sports reported was interest from Manchester United. At this rate, Jose Mourinho will come knocking again in no time.
