The West Ham United loanee is enduring a disastrous spell at Reading and Rangers would surely have appreciated his talents.
You could understand West Ham United becoming increasingly frustrated by Reece Oxford’s lack of game time on loan at Reading. It is not like they sent their prized asset out to a Championship club for him to be completely excluded from first-team action.
As it stands, the teenager has still not made his debut for Jaap Stam’s promotion chasing side after signing a six-month deal on deadline day of the winter transfer window, as reported by the Daily Mirror.
And although Ibrox hardly appears the ideal environment for a young player at the moment with Rangers in turbulence on and off the pitch, the identity of the club’s new manager still unknown and recent results leaving them in a battle for second place, his decision to move to the Madejski over Glasgow appears a mistake.
Oxford admitted last month in quotes reported by the Daily Record that he chose Reading because he felt their passing football would suit his ability to play out from the back – an explanation that caused a degree of consternation among Rangers supporters.
Mark Warburton’s passing philosophy may have divided the fan base but it appeared ideal for Oxford’s style of play after all.
However, as it stands he might as well have continued plying his trade with the West Ham reserves with his short-term spell at Reading already almost halfway over without the 18-year-old even setting foot on the pitch.
Whether Rangers, after the departure of the manager who wanted to sign him, would have suited Oxford better is impossible to answer but at least he could have returned to the capital with a bit more experience under his belt.
