Glasgow Rangers are reportedly set to sign Ligue 1 defender Edson Mexer from Rennes.

Former Rennes goalkeeper Gilles Rousset believes Edson Mexer will be a fine addition to the Rangers defence, telling the Daily Record that he could be even better than Jean-Alain Boumsong at Ibrox.
The 30-year-old centre-back is expected to swap Ligue 1 for the Scottish Premiership when his contract expires at the end of this season; the Daily Record claiming that he has already met Gers boss Steven Gerrard and could travel to Glasgow to watch Sunday’s Old Firm derby against Celtic.
Mexer has established himself as one of the most reliable centre-backs around during a five-year spell in France and Rousset is confident that the Mozambique international could have a huge impact at Ibrox.
The one-time Hearts glovesman has even compared Mexer to Boumsong, the former France international who spent a single season at Ibrox before moving to Newcastle United for £8 million in 2005.
“Mexer is probably similar to (Boumsong) but maybe even sharper and even stronger,” Rousset says.
“He is more aggressive than Boumsong but if Rangers supporters are looking for a comparison then he is that kind of player.

“Mexer is good in the air but he can play with the ball. If Rangers can sign him on a free transfer then it would be a great piece of business because he is a very good player.
“He would be perfectly suited to Scottish football because you need to be strong, good in the air and quite quick and he would adapt without any problems.”
Mexer has enjoyed a fine season with Rennes, helping Julien Stephan’s side reach the Europa League round of 16 before scoring a crucial goal in their stunning Coupe de France final victory against Paris Saint-Germain recently.
