Rangers are not considering making a move for Giovanni van Bronckhorst – and the reason why makes little sense
Rangers fans won’t want to admit it but former Celtic favourite Kris Commons has a point. There are a multitude of reasons why Derek McInnes is the favourite to take over from Pedro Caixinha at Rangers but the 46-year-old is far from the perfect fit.
McInnes may know the league, having taken Aberdeen to three straight second placed finishes. He may know the club too, having played for Rangers between 1995 and 2000.
But just because McInnes has knowledge of the Scottish game does not make him equipped to take over a club with the size and the expectation of Rangers.
As Commons told The Mail, it seems a little short-sighted for the Light Blues to close off the possibility of another foreign manager just because Pedro Caixinha’s seven month reign ended in disappointment and disarray.
“The board should also be looking at foreign managers and the full spectrum of available options,” Commons argues.
Not another Pedro
The Daily Record reported after Caixinha’s long-awaited departure that the Rangers board felt British was the way to go. But have The Gers simply ruled out some of the most gifted young tacticians in Europe purely because they want someone who speaks English as their first language?
That seems to be the case. Like McInnes, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst knows Scottish football and knows Rangers, having been a real fans’ favourite at Ibrox in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Unlike McInnes, however, the legendary Dutch left-back has proven his credentials where it really counts, guiding Feyenoord to the KNVB Cup in 2016 before winning the Eredivisie for the first time since 1999 last season.
The 42-year-old ticks almost all the boxes. So surely Rangers should overlook the fact he speaks with an accent?
