The 27-year-old was signed by Koeman at Southampton – could he follow him to Everton?

Everton already seem relatively short of options in their reported search for an understudy right-back.

Le 10 Sport claim that The Toffees have identified the versatile, experienced Bakary Sagna as the ideal alternative to Seamus Coleman but, at the age of 34, would the Frenchman really be content to while away his twilight years on the bench?

Furthermore, a £4 million bid for Hull City’s Ahmed Elmohamady, as reported by the Yorkshire Post, is hardly going to encourage much excitement at Goodison Park.

But, if Everton are intent on looking at affordable options and utilising Farhad Moshiri’s not insignificant funds to improve the starting XI rather than the options in reserve, perhaps they’d be better off targeting a player Ronald Koeman knows and trusts.

Cuco Martina may have only started 17 Premier League games since the Dutchman brought him to Southampton in the summer of 2015 but, whenever he has been called upon, the 27-year-old has looked a reliable operator, solid enough at the back and blessed with an impressive whipped delivery from deep.

Out of contract at the end of the season, Everton would be getting a lot more than a player who appears to have devoted most of his 15 minutes of fame to that stunning, swerving, once in a lifetime volley against Arsenal last season.

In fact, without the impressive Cedric Soares ahead of him in the pecking order, Martina may have already become an established top flight starter.

The Daily Mail reported in the summer that Koeman had launched a £1.25 million to be reunited with Martina on Merseyside. A year on, however, he could save the club a few pennies by nabbing him on a free.
