Mo Besic has thrived since joining Championship side Middlesbrough on loan from the Premier League giants Everton in the January transfer window.

As yet, there has been no suggestion that Idrissa Gana Gueye will be going anywhere this summer, but FootMercato are still reporting that Everton have identified a potential replacement for their tough-tackling midfielder.

It is understood that the Toffees are keeping a close eye on FC Ural Yekaterinbur’s Petrus Boumal, who has been very impressive in the Russian Premier League since he joined from CSKA Sofia last year.

But perhaps Everton’s interest in Boumal says more about the future of Mo Besic than it does about Gueye.

Muhamed Besic of Everton runs with the ball during a preseason friendly match between FC Twente and Everton FC at Sportpark de Stockakker on July 19, 2017 in De Lutte, Netherlands.

According to the Northern Echo, Middlesbrough are very interested in signing the Bosnian enforcer Besic at the end of the season with the 25-year-old currently earning rave reviews since moving to the Riverside on loan in January.

And the report adds that Everton would be open to selling him too, provided they receive a profit on the £4.5 million they paid Ferencvaros back in the summer of 2014.

But if Besic had been harbouring any hopes that his brilliant form in the Championship would give him the chance to kick start an Everton career, he might be left disappointed.

A relentless series of injuries, reports that the Toffees would be willing to sell, as well as these links to Boumal suggest that he still is not in Sam Allardyce’s plans.

But with two months left in the season, Besic still has time to change that.
