Premier League outfit Everton sent left-back Luke Garbutt to Oxford United last summer but he has started just eight League One games.

Everton loanee Luke Garbutt was left fuming about Oxford United’s 4-2 defeat away at Accrington Town on Tuesday as his miserable spell at the Kassam Stadium goes on, as reported by the Oxford Times.

A left-back who appeared to be set for big things at Goodison Park during the reign of Roberto Martinez, Garbutt fell out of favour after the Spaniard’s sacking three years ago and now finds himself in League One in an attempt to get minutes under his belt.

The 25-year-old’s spell at Oxford hasn’t exactly gone to plan, however, making just eight League One starts with another seven appearances off the bench.

Garbutt played just 30 minutes in the heavy loss at Accrington yesterday and scored a goal, though his efforts went unrewarded as Karl Robinson’s team conceded four at the other end.

“We just shot ourselves in the foot every time by conceding stupid goals,” said the former England U21 international, who started his career at Leeds before moving to Goodison Park in 2009.

“I thought we were going to come back a couple of times to possibly get a draw out of the game, but that’s the way things are going at the minute.”

Oxford are now in the League One relegation zone, falling to 22nd after their 14th defeat of the season.

Garbutt, meanwhile, has a contract at Everton until 2020 but it seems unlikely that he will have caught the eye of Marco Silva given that he cannot get into the starting XI of a struggling third tier side.
