Cenk Tosun is finally heading to Goodison Park with Premier League side Everton agreeing sign the Turkish striker from Super Lig champions Besiktas.
Since Farhad Moshiri became Everton’s majority shareholder in the summer of 2016 and ushered in an era of unprecedented financial might, the Merseyside giants have smashed their transfer record on four separate occasions.
And while Cenk Tosun will cost a lot less than the £45million Everton paid to free Gylfi Sigurdsson from the clutches of Swansea City, the Toffees’ will break another landmark with their impending signing of the Turkish international centre-forward.
According to Sky Sports, Everton have agreed a £27million deal to finally bring Tosun to England from Turkish Super Lig champions Besiktas.
Whether the 26-year-old is up to the standard required to replace Romelu Lukaku at Goodison Park remains to be seen. But after inspiring the Istanbul giants to successive league titles, and also netting four times in six games in this season’s Champions League group stage, Everton fans should be excited about the Turk’s arrival.
And it is a sign of his undoubted quality, or perhaps the transfer market’s rapid inflation, that Tosun will now become the most expensive export in the history of Turkish top flight, costing about double the fee Roma paid to sign Istanbul BB youngster Cengiz Under in July, as reported by Goal.
Tosun has much to do to win over the Goodison faithful, however, with many taking to Twitter to ask whether he really is a crucial piece in the jigsaw.
But he is not the most costly player in the Turkish league’s history for nothing.
