Tyias Browning has enjoyed a promising start to life at Sunderland and Everton could benefit.
On occasion, a move happens that benefits all parties. And Sunderland’s signing of young Tyias Browning from Everton appears to have had a positive impact on both clubs, not to mention the player himself.
The 23-year-old, who came through Everton’s academy, only made five Premier League appearances under Toffees manager Ronald Koeman last season and needed to move on, at least on a temporary basis, to further his promising career.
And a season-long loan move to the Stadium of Light appears inspired even at this early stage of the season. Browning has stood out in his natural position, at the centre of the defence, as Sunderland have set about defying the pre-season cynics – at least prior to Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Leeds United.
Sunderland were unbeaten in their first three league games under Simon Grayson, winning away at Norwich and picking up impressive draws with Derby and Wednesday to ensure they came through a daunting start with a decent tally of points on the board.
Forming a burgeoning partnership with Lamine Kone, Browning has offered a glimpse of the tantalising potential that saw him so highly rated at Goodison Park, starring in that 3-1 win at Norwich and demonstrating impressive positional sense.
Koeman has shown during his first year at Everton that he is not afraid to give youth a chance and, with Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams both on the wrong side of 30, there may be a place in the club’s starting XI for a youngster to partner Michael Keane for the long-term.
Browning has a long way to go before he can harbour genuine hopes of forcing his way into Everton’s first-team plans, with his passing ability in particular an area in need of improvement.
However, if he maintains his excellent start at Sunderland, Browning may not be far off laying claim to a place in Everton’s starting XI in 12 month’s time.
