While Gerard Deulofeu is in superb form at AC Milan, Everton could bring in Rachid Ghezzal on the back of a nightmare season with Lyon in Ligue 1.
If Gerard Deulofeu’s influential displays since moving to AC Milan on loan in January had not already highlighted the error of Everton’s ways, bringing in a winger with only two goals to his name all season as his replacement will hardly help matters.
Yet, according to RMC Sports, Everton manager Ronald Koeman is still determined to bring one of Europe’s most drawn out transfer sagas to a successful conclusion. After missing out last summer, The Toffees remain hopeful that they will lure Rachid Ghezzal to Goodison Park this time around.
The Algerian international winger is out of contract this summer but, having come through the club’s academy and with president Jean Michel Aulas eager to retain a homegrown backbone at Lyon, his future is still shrouded in uncertainty.
Nonetheless, it appears that a frustrating campaign has not prevented potential suitors from expressing their interest. Ghezzal has been trusted with just 12 Ligue 1 starts this season after failing miserably to build on a stand-out breakthrough campaign, scoring just twice and producing another two assists from the right wing.
At just 24, Ghezzal has plenty of time on his side but, in truth, he has far less potential than the man he could replace in the Everton attack.
After all, Deulofeu was rewarded with his superb form in Serie A with a shock return to the Spanish national team. In a 2-0 friendly win against France, the Barcelona-linked wide man won a penalty and scored the second.
Signing the infuriating, inconsistent Ghezzal in his place, then, could represent a maddening backwards step.
