Phil Jagielka made his first Premier League appearance for Everton since the opening day of the season in last weekend’s 0-0 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Heading into the final few months of his contract, the veteran centre-back had fallen down the pecking order in recent weeks, with Kurt Zouma and Michael Keane establishing a promising partnership at the back and Yerry Mina waiting in the wings.

But 36-year-old Jagielka offered a reminder of his talents when coming off the bench for the final 15 minutes of Sunday’s goalless draw at Stamford Bridge – his first appearance since being sent off against Wolves on the opening day of the season.

And, speaking to the Liverpool Echo, former Everton captain Kevin Ratcliffe has implored Everton manager Marco Silva to give more game-time to the former Sheffield United ace – especially if the Portuguese tactician is planning to use a three-man defence more frequently.

“Phil Jagielka came on for the last 20-minutes at Chelsea and his experience and assurance shone through,” Ratcliffe said. “I like the idea of an experienced player in the middle talking and guiding the other two.

“If Marco Silva does decide to introduce three at the back I think Jags comes back into the fold and I’d like to see him in that role dictating things.

“Despite his age he’s still one of the fittest – and quickest – players at the club.”

It remains to be seen whether Jagielka, who arrived at Goodison Park back in 2006, will stay beyond this season with The Sun claiming that Silva has sent scouts to watch Manchester United’s Chris Smalling on a number of occasions recently.

Smalling is out of contract in the summer but Manchester United, who value him at £30 million, have the option to extend his deal.
