Harry Maguire has been relegated with Hull City but Everton may be willing to offer him a Premier League lifeline.
If there were any Everton supporters watching Harry Maguire in the flesh for the first time on Sunday, Hull City’s 4-0 battering by Crystal Palace did not exactly paint him in the best light.
Lining up in an unfamiliar right-back role, the beastly defender struggled to deal with Palace battering ram Christian Benteke from start to finish before succumbing to injury and departing five minutes after the interval.
The Daily Mail reported recently that Everton could turn their attentions to Maguire in the summer, especially with supposed top target, Burnley’s Michael Keane, courting interest from seemingly each and every Premier League giant.
Yet, the £12million-rated Maguire should not be judged in isolation of the humiliating defeat that confirmed Hull’s third relegation from the Premier League in seven years (The Sun).
He is one of the most complete defenders to emerge in English football for many a year, with his composure in possession and ability to drive forward from the back allied to a typically British spirit and never-say-die attitude.
In many ways, it is surprising that Keane is supposedly on the radar of Manchester United, Liverpool and co while the likes of Southampton and Newcastle have been linked with a summer switch for the Hull City centre-back.
Yet, while a number of supporters would happily pay for his taxi from the KCom to Goodison Park, there are still a few who need convincing after Sam Allardyce’s Palace ripped Hull to shreds.
