Arsenal need a replacemenet for Danny Welbeck – could The Gunners target proven Premier League attackers Richarlison or Wilfried Zaha?
You have to feel for Danny Welbeck. The Arsenal striker was really starting to find a new lease of life under Unai Emery at The Emirates, scoring five goals in an impressive start to the season.
But in a cruel twist of fate, the England international might now never play for The Gunners again. Welbeck suffered yet another serious injury in the Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon recently, breaking his ankle just months before his Arsenal contract expires.
And, according to The Times, Arsenal are now targeting a new attacker in January to fill the void with Lille’s £27 million-rated Ivory Coast international Nicolas Pepe understood to be a target. Pepe has contributed eight goals and five assists in 13 Ligue 1 games this season.
Ladbrokes, however, have offered short odds on the North London giants signing two Premier League attackers when the winter window swings open.
Everton’s Richarlison is priced at 4/1 to make the move to Arsenal, with Crystal Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha slightly ahead at 3/1.
From an outside perspective, however, neither deal looks particularly likely. Everton paid a club-record £50 million for Richarlison as recently in July and the Brazil international has already scored six Premier League goals for The Toffees.
Zaha, meanwhile, remains absolutely essential to Crystal Palace’s hopes of avoiding the drop. The last time the Eagles won a Premier League game without their academy graduate was against Sunderland in 2016.
