Premier League giants Everton need a left-back and tried to lure Aaron Martin to Goodison Park from La Liga club Espanyol in January.
Spain has a habit of churning out top quality left-backs. Julen Lopetegui will somehow be forced to pick from Jordi Alba, Marcos Alonso, Juan Bernat and more as he chooses his World Cup squad, and Espanyol’s Aaron Martin is the latest to emerge.
The 20-year-old has taken La Liga by storm since emerging at the Catalan club in 2016, although it appears he will not be plying his trade at Espanyol for much longer.
Because Marca has reported that Quique Sanchez Flores’ side are now almost certain to cash in on Martin during the summer transfer window. It is understood that they are not in financial need to sell but, with various European clubs tracking the Spain under-21 star, they appear to have accepted that a departure is inevitable.
The Toffees are still on the lookout for a left-back, with Leighton Baines’ injury meaning that Cuco Martina has been forced to spend the last few months filling in in an unfamiliar role on the opposite flank.
And Martin, an athletic and speedy left-sider and a typically modern full-back, looks every inch the sort of player Everton need with Baines heading towards the Autumn of his career.
Marca report that there is a buyout clause of around £27 million in Martin’s contract, although Espanyol might accept a little less.
