Celtic powerhouse Erik Sviatchenko’s long-term future at Parkhead is surely now in doubt after the defender took a swipe at Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers over the latter’s decision to drop him in January.
The 26-year-old left Celtic on loan in January to rejoin former side FC Midtjylland until the end of the season, after making just two appearances all season in the Champions League qualifying stage due to multiple injuries.
Speaking to the Daily Record, the Denmark international stated that he was “surprised” by Rodgers’ decision to drop him from the Celtic first team after recovering from injury and eventually letting him go on loan.
With his future already in doubt, surely his comments come as a parting shot to Celtic after appearing to have catapulted down the pecking order following the signings of Marvin Compper and Jack Hendry.
Rodgers will not be impressed to hear one of his players question his judgement so openly in the media, and with his chances of resurrecting a Celtic starting berth already slim, this could come as a final nail in the coffin.
Sviatchenko has two years remaining on his contract at Celtic Park, which is reportedly worth £12,000 a week according to the Daily Star. As one of the club’s higher earners, Rodgers may seem him as manoeuvrable in order to fresh up funds.
His comments, then, may see the centre-back offloaded in the summer transfer window when his loan in Denmark comes to an end as Jozo Simunovic, Dedryck Boyata, Compper and Hendry sit above him in the pecking order.
