Sunderland need a prolific League One striker and there are not many better than Preston North End’s Eoin Doyle.

If Sunderland are on the lookout for a proven League One striker to fire them back into the Championship, there are worse players to sign than Eoin Doyle.

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Preston North End are looking to sell the 30-year-old this summer with just one year remaining on his contract. Doyle, then, would come far cheaper than the likes of Jack Marriott (below), but has the potential and the track record to give Sunderland some much needed bite in the final third.

Doyle notched 14 goals in 28 starts on loan at Oldham Athletic last season and, according to the Lancashire Telegraph, the Latics’ hopes of signing him permanently are now all-but non-existent after they were relegated to League Two.

That was not the first time Doyle scored goals for fun in the third tier, however. The Irishman netted 32 times in 69 games for Chesterfield between 2013 and 2015 before an ill-fated move to Cardiff City.

While he would only be a short-term solution, Doyle is the sort of striker who could give Sunderland the firepower they need at this level. He would be an astute alternative to the likes of Josh Maja and Joel Asoro who, while very talented, remain unproven and could struggle to deal with the culture shock of physical, lower league football.

The Telegraph stated that five League One clubs were after Doyle and Sunderland should make it six.
