League One Sunderland have missed out on a number of striker targets this summer but could Preston’s Eoin Doyle be the man they need?

When will Sunderland sign a striker? That is the question on the lips of every Black Cats fan with the club’s long-running pursuit of a new centre-forward still not coming to an end.
Since the start of the transfer window, Sunderland have seen Lyle Taylor, Gavin Reilly and Jason Cummings join League One rivals Charlton, Bristol City and Peterborough United respectively.
They also failed in an attempt to bring in Hibernian’s prolific Swiss striker Florian Kamberi, Mo Eisa joined Championship Bristol City after a failed £1 million bid while a deal for Bradford City’s Charlie Wyke appears to be up in the air.
So Sunderland should not waste an excellent opportunity to bring Eoin Doyle to the Stadium of Light.
The Northern Echo claimed earlier in the month that Preston’s 30-year-old Irishman was ‘under serious consideration’ by the Wearside club as they look to land a proven League One goalscorer. Doyle netted 14 times in 30 games for a relegated Oldham side last season.

And latest reports from the Sun claim that Peterborough and MK Dons had bids of £300,000 accepted by Preston, though neither side could agree personal terms. So this gives Sunderland the chance they’ve been waiting for.
Doyle might not be the most exciting striker they could sign but he is a reliable source of goals in the third tier and would be an improvement on the options already at Jack Ross’ disposal.
Can they take advantage of Peterborough and MK Dons’ failure?
