League One Sunderland were reportedly hoping to sign left-back Calvin Miller on loan from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic in the transfer window.
Calvin Miller has really struggled for first-team opportunities at Celtic thanks to the terrific form of another Hoops academy graduate – Kieran Tierney.
Despite the departure of Emilio Izaguirre seemingly pushing Miller up the pecking order to second-choice left-back, the 20-year-old was still restricted to just four appearances in all competitions last season.
And if the Glasgow-born talent was hoping for a bigger role in 2018/19, he could be disappointed.
According to the Scottish Sun, the 32-year-old is set for a shock return to the club he first joined in 2010 after one tumultuous year in Saudi Arabia with Al-Fayha.
So what now for Miller? Will he be content with another year in the reserves? Surely the former Scotland U17 international would be better off following in the footsteps of Ryan Christie, Kristoffer Ajer and co in leaving Parkhead on a temporary basis.
TEAMtalk had reported earlier in the summer that League One Sunderland were interested, and they could still do with another option at left-back. Bryan Oviedo’s big wages mean the Wearsiders are expected to cash in if possible, while the injury-prone Reece James is already on the sidelines.
Miller, then, would be a good addition for Jack Ross, the former St Mirren manager who has made a name for himself by getting the best out of young players.
