Scott Brown was sent off for ‘over-celebrating’ at the end of Celtic’s 1-0 Scottish Premiership win agaisnt Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
The raucous celebrations at Rugby Park on Sunday afternoon could probably be heard all the way back in Glasgow.
Kilmarnock have been Celtic’s bogey team since Steve Clarke took over in Ayrshire, beating Brendan Rodgers’ side back in September thanks to a last-gasp winner from Stuart Findlay – a player who started his career at Parkhead.
So its fair to say Celtic fans would have been a little worried ahead of their daunting return to Rugby Park on Sunday with an eighth league title on the line. And, as you’d expect, Killie gave the champions one hell of a game.
But, with just seconds remaining, Scott Brown of all people crashed home a winner to send Celtic eight points clear with 12 games remaining. One hand, you could argue, is on the trophy already.
Clarke, however, was far from happy by the celebrations, Brown throwing himself into the away fans before receiving a second yellow for whipping up something of a frenzy.
“In in sort of backhanded way, the celebrations that were probably a little bit over the top, were big compliment to Kilmarnock,” Clarke told the Herald Scotland.
Rodgers agreed, admitting that the reaction from both players and supporters was ‘not acceptable’. But, reacting on Twitter, Celtic fans have hit back at the criticism.
After all, that most hard-fought of victories really had the feel of a title decider.
