Premier League side Crystal Palace could do with a top quality number one and Mexico’s World Cup ace Ochoa has proved he is exactly that.
There is something about Guillermo Ochoa at a World Cup.
Mexico’s spring-loaded shot-stopper was one of the stars of the 2014 Brazil tournament with his Gordan Banks’ style save to deny Neymar in the group stages one of the best seen in recent World Cup history.
And Ochoa has once again stepped up this time around. Mexico are through to the round-of-16 at the expense of South Korea and Germany, yes Germany, and the 32-year-old is once again the toast of Central America.
Ochoa might have been beaten three times by Sweden as Mexico snuck through on Wednesday, but his performances in wins against Germany and South Korea were a joy to behold. In fact, before the clash against Sweden, no goalkeeper in this year’s World Cup had made more saves than Ochoa’s 15.
So Premier League clubs in need of a goalkeeper should be taking note of one of the most underrated stopper in world football. Crystal Palace, for example, could do with a top drawer number one despite the signing of Vicente Guaita and Ochoa most certainly fits the bill.
The 96-capped veteran has never really proved himself at the top level in club football. He was relegated in France and Spain with Ajaccio and Granada and is now in Belgium with Standard Liege.
It is time Ochoa got his chance in England and Crystal Palace could do a whole lot worse.
