The 30-year-old failed to score a single goal during a loan spell at Santos Laguna in the first half of the season but, since moving to Liga MX rival Necaxa during the January transfer window, he has found his shooting boots again.
In nine league games, Herrera has his the target five times in the red and white stripes of Necaxa, including two poachers efforts in the weekend draw with Pachuca.
The Mexican international came alive from a pair of set pieces, showing a sharpness that was barely seen at Ibrox to convert twice from close range.
In fact, Herrera is starting to show the kind of instinctive goal-scoring that encouraged Rangers to pay £1.5 million for him during the summer of 2017 (Daily Record).
The chances of Herrera being handed a second chance in Glasgow look slim. But Steven Gerrard will surely have been enthralled if he watched the striker save his side from defeat in arguably his most impressive performance of the season.
