Rangers were reportedly mulling over a bid for Scottish Premiership striker Eamonn Brophy after his fine form for Kilmarnock.
There has never been any doubt about Eamonn Brophy’s ability to produce something out of nothing.
And with 33 minutes on the clock at Parkhead on Sunday, the Kilmarnock striker produced his finest moment of the Angelo Alessio era by fizzing a stunning strike into the roof of the net to leave the Champions stunned on their own turf.
Brophy was discarded by Celtic as a youngster, he was ‘too small’ apparently, and there was certainly plenty of feeling in a thunderbolt of a shot which had Fraser Forster grasping at thin air.
But Brophy himself will be the first to admit that these moments of magic have been rather few and far between of late.
Since being rewarded the number nine shirt at Killie after a breakthrough 2018/19 season in which he netted a career-best 12 goals in all competitions and even made his Scotland debut, Brophy has scored just twice in nine games with Angelo Alessio’s hopes of building on Steve Clarke’s success constrained by a lack of firepower in the final third
According to TEAMtalk, Rangers were interested in handing Brophy a route back to the top of the Scottish game earlier in the summer with Steven Gerrard’s side apparently mulling over a bid before the window slammed shut.
But, if one of the most naturally gifted forwards north of the border wants to prove that he belongs at a club of Rangers’ stature, he has no choice but to improve drastically on an average of one goal every 4.5 games.
Alfredo Morelos, Rangers’ firebrand Colombian, scores every 1.2 games in comparison while the evergreen Jermain Defoe averages a strike every 1.8 matches.
Brophy is one of the most unpredictable and exciting forwards in the league but Rangers would rather have a striker who scores 25 tap-ins than one who scores 10 long-range stunners.
