Spurs reportedly want to sign Alfie Mawson from Premier League rivals Swansea City.

There appears to be a very real chance that Tottenham Hotspur could sell one of their best players this summer and replace him with an inferior footballer – who will cost twice as much.

The Times state that Spurs are preparing a summer bid for Swansea City centre-back Alfie Mawson, who is rated by the South Wales club at a staggering £40 million. This is almost twice as much as Spurs will expect to make from Toby Alderweireld, who the same paper claimed could be sold with just a year remaining on his contract.

And while Mawson is a talented defender who shares some similarities with Spurs’ Belgian battler, notably their fondness for a 60 yard ping, that price-tag makes what would normally look a rather astute deal very contentious among supporters.

Especially with the likes of Jonathan Tah, a more established player and a full German international, available for £5 million less at Bayer Leverkusen, as reported by The Mirror.

Stuttgart’s Benjamin Pavard would likely cost a similar fee but, while Mawson has not yet made his England debut, the 21-year-old is currently keeping Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte out of the senior France side.

So no wonder Spurs fans are not keen on a £40 million deal for a player who cost £5 million from Barnsley two years ago.
