If Tottenham Hotspur are looking for a young, modern and technically gifted centre-back to replace Toby Alderweireld in North London, they should perhaps look no further than a man they initially sounded out back in 2017, Kasim Adams Nuhu.

Swiss newspaper Blick reported about a year-and-a-half ago that Spurs had been keeping a close eye on the Young Boys centre-back, who was understood to be valued at £8 million.

Now, Nuhu’s name has been absent from the gossip columns ever since, having eventually left Young Boys for Bundesliga overachievers Hoffenheim. But, with Tottenham scouring the market for promising defensive talents, the Ghana international might just have provided a timely reminder of why Mauricio Pochettino was interested.

Yes, Hoffenheim lost 2-1 to Manchester City to finish bottom of their Champions League group on Wednesday but Nuhu’s performance gave Julian Nagelsmann plenty to feel positive about.

In just his second Champions League appearance, the 23-year-old delivered a display of maturity, composure and quite remarkable technical ability. His reading of the game was impressive, his passing range exceptional and he even showcased an ability to start attacks from deep with a marauding run or an accurate through ball.

The fact that Nuhu stood out with Nicolas Otamendi and Aymeric Laporte on the pitch speaks volumes.

If Pochettino was watching, with his Spurs team already assured of a place in the knockout stages, Nuhu’s display will surely have given him plenty to think about.
