Sunderland are reportedly interested in signing League One’s top scorer, Doncaster Rovers striker John Marquis.

Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann has made it clear that he the club have little interest in selling John Marquis this month amid interest from League One rivals Sunderland.
Marquis is the joint-top scorer in the third tier right now with 16 goals to his name, level with Luton Town striker James Collins, and Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that Sunderland had identified him as a potential alternative if a deal for Wigan Athletic’s Will Grigg fails to materialise.
But, speaking to the Doncaster Free Press, McCann has stood firm on the future of his talisman, indicating that the target is to keep Marquis until the end of the season with Donny just one place outside the play-offs.
“I don’t think anyone would stand in John’s way if a massive team in the Championship came in for him at the end of the season,” McCann of the former Millwall striker.

“Now, the club don’t need to sell and the only focus is to get in that top six. “We want to do it with John here.”
If all goes to plan, Sunderland will be a ‘massive team in the Championship’ next season with Jack Ross hoping to lead the Black Cats back to the second tier at the first attempt. But it looks like the Wearsiders will have to compete for a place in the top two without Marquis in their ranks.
Doncaster rejected six-figure bids from Peterborough United and Aberdeen last summer, according to the Free Press, so they are hardly likely to listen to offers now.
