Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer has been linked with a return to Everton.

Former Everton midfielder Don Hutchison has taken to Twitter to warn The Toffees against making an approach for Wayne Rooney – though Ronald Koeman may have a different view.

The former Goodison Park graduate made history at the weekend by becoming Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer though his 250th strike for the club, a stunning last-minute free-kick to rescue a point against Stoke City, was not enough to put to bed discussions over his future.

Speculation has intensified that Rooney could wind down his playing career with a mega-money move to the Chinese Super League, with Jose Mourinho insisting that he would have no problem if the 31-year-old decided to take up a new challenge in the Far East, The Guardian reports.

Rooney Everton

However, a romantic return to where it all began continues to be suggested though Hutchison believes the sight of Rooney in Everton blue would not necessarily benefit his former club.

It’s undeniable that Rooney’s considerable powers have been on the wane for some time, confirmed after he lost his place in the United starting XI following a series of one-paced, below-par performances characterised by a lumbering first touch and an alarming lack of acceleration.

Nonetheless, as reported by The Guardian, Koeman stated back in October that he would be ‘pleased’ to welcome Rooney back to Goodison if the opportunity arose though, in truth, there’s little to suggest he would benefit a bright, vibrant Everton team blessed with youth and energy.

Hutchison has a point. Everton cannot let sentiment overrule sense.
