Losing out to Celtic for Jack Hendry might not matter to Rangers

Celtic sealed the deal to land Jack Hendry ahead of Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers on the final day of the January transfer window.

The race to sign Dundee defender Jack Hendry went right down to the wire.

According to the Daily Record, Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers were going head-to-head to sign the 22-year-old before the transfer window shut.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers apparently demanded that the club didn’t let Hendry slip through their grasp and, according to TEAMtalk, The Hoops tied up a deal to nab the youngster from under Rangers’ nose for a not insignificant fee of £1.5 million.

But while Celtic fans will no doubt bask in the glory of signing a player who Rodgers believes is destined for greatness in the very near future, could Rangers claim that they already have an even more talented defensive prospect in their ranks?

Former Gers boss Pedro Caixinha ramped up expectations when he claimed that Ross McCrorie was certain to be one of the greatest defenders in Scottish history, after McCrorie made his senior debut in a cup clash with Partick Thistle back in September.

And while 19-year-old McCrorie has a long way to go to match the exploits of countless Rangers legends, it’s fair to say he’s made a strong start.

The academy graduate has been a regular in the starting XI since and has impressed against Celtic on two occasions already. A solid and technically gifted defender, McCrorie has even filled in in a deep-lying midfield role and rightly earned rave reviews for his performances.

How much would he be worth in today’s market? Probably a little more than £1.5 million. It will be interesting to see how these two players develop in the next few years on either side of the Glasgow divide.
