Scottish Premiership giants Rangers reportedly want to sign Connor Goldson from Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion.
Rangers attracted plenty of criticism for their approach to the transfer market last summer.
The Ibrox giants appeared to develop a tactic revolving around bidding well below a player’s market value and trying to nab him on the cheap, ignoring the price-tag his current club were demanding and making a flurry of low-ball offers.
As reported by the Daily Record, they offered just £300,000 for Aberdeen talisman Kenny McLean for instance, and simply refused to meet the £1 million Hearts were demanding for Jamie Walker. According to the Scottish Sun, they missed out on Louis Moult too, because they refused to pay the fee Motherwell wanted for the prolific striker.
Former Ibrox hero Kris Boyd was one of many critics:
“There’s one club unsettling everybody. Pay the money and take the players if you want them,” Boyd told the Daily Record after Rangers made a rather insulting £650,000 bid for his Kilmarnock team-mate Jordan Jones, an offer which also infuriated manager Steve Clarke.
But have Rangers finally learned their lessons? Reports in The Mail that Rangers are considering a £2 million offer for Brighton’s Connor Goldson suggest that they have accepted that a low-ball approach results in merely annoying the selling club.
Rangers have seen a £1.5 million bid knocked back already, but it seems that they are willing to offer another half a million to tempt Brighton into a sale.
It seems that the Glasgow giants have realised that the most effective way to sign players you really want is to actually meet their price tags. And, it seems, Rangers belatedly are willing to do just that.
