Salomon Rondon has not scored in three Premier League games since joining Newcastle United from West Bromwich Albion.
We might not even be midway through September, but it seems that Rafa Benitez is already planning to enhance his squad during the January transfer window.
It was another frustrating summer for the Spaniard, who was once again forced to miss out on many of his top targets, with Magpies owner Mike Ashley unwilling to put his money where his mouth is. Newcastle eventually spent around £20 million on seven new players.
With gaps still present in the Magpies’ squad, the Chronicle reports that Benitez is already making enquiries about potential deals in the New Year. The former Liverpool and Chelsea boss allegedly wants a midfielder, a left-back and a striker.
His interest in a centre-forward perhaps raises the most questions. One being; what does this mean for Salomon Rondon?
After a prolonged transfer saga, the 28-year-old moved to St James’ Park from West Brom on loan with Dwight Gayle going the other way.
But Rondon has not scored in any of his three Premier League games so far, and a rather average record at West Brom (24 goals in 108 matches) means he is possibly not the prolific number nine to take Newcastle to the next level.
There are doubts, too, about whether Newcastle could afford to sign him permanently at the end of his loan spell. So it makes sense that Benitez would already be scouring the market for alternatives.
Rondon must find form in the next few months or risk losing his place in the starting XI.
