Rangers have appointed Graeme Murty as the club’s full-time manager until the end of the season – which probably isn’t good news for Fabio Cardoso.

Rangers interim manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and St Johnstone at Ibrox Stadium on December 16, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Rangers squad is likely to be divided by the announcement on Friday afternoon that Graeme Murty has been handed the manager’s job until the end of this season.

While the likes of Jason Holt, Josh Windass and Danny Wilson have been revitalised since Murty replaced Pedro Caixinha in the Rangers dugout back in October, many of the club’s foreign legion have been left out in the cold.

None more so than Fabio Cardoso, the £1.3 million summer signing from Vitoria Setubal.

A regular starter under Caixinha, the Portuguese centre-back has played just 45 minutes of football since his compatriot was let go.

Reports in the Daily Record stated that Cardoso may have the option of bringing an end to his underwhelming Rangers career as soon as next month, with Primeira Liga strugglers Estoril hoping to bring him home.

And any hope that the former Benfica youngster might have had about a resurgence at Ibrox might have taken a huge hit with the clearly unimpressed Murty set to call the shots for the next six months at least.

In truth, Cardoso has simply failed to settle in Scottish football. Despite standing at 6ft 1ins, the 23-year-old has found the pace and power of the game north of the border difficult to deal with, and he needs regular game time to adapt to a new league and a new culture. But with Murty at the helm, you wonder when, or if, Cardoso’s next chance will ever come.
