Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers wanted Eredivisie Golden Boot winner Nicolai Jorgensen but now Premier League side Newcastle have bid.

Both Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen in recent months.

But there appears to be only one English club in for the reigning Eredivisie Golden Boot winner this month: Newcastle United.

As reported by the Shields Gazette, the Magpies have seen an opening bid of £12 million rejected by Feyenoord for the talismanic target-man, who they rate at around £20 million.

Such a fee might seem alien to a Newcastle side who have not spent a penny in January. But Sky Sports claims that owner Mike Ashley has finally been persuaded to spend and is even willing to shatter Newcastle’s 13-year-old transfer record to bring Jorgensen to St James’ Park.

But surely Newcastle should not have it all their own way. According to The Mirror (15 November, page 48), Wolves were looking to bring the 27-year-old to Molineux during the winter but, since then, the speculation has gone a little cold.

It was understood that Wolves wanted Jorgensen as competition for Leo Bonatini, the club’s only senior centre-forward.

And now that the Brazilian has gone ten games without a goal, his last coming in the 1-0 win at Birmingham in the first week of December, Newcastle’s bid should have Wolves glancing in Jorgensen’s direction once again.

While not the most technically gifted or quick-footed centre-forward, Jorgensen is a pure goal-scorer who hit the net 21 times to inspire Feyenoord to their first Eredivisie title of the century last season.

Could he make a similar, title-winning impact at Wolves?
