Scottish Premiership champions Celtic sold Stuart Armstrong to Southampton and failed to sign Hibernian’s John McGinn – what a chance for Callum McGregor

The 2017/18 season was probably the best of Callum McGregor’s Celtic career.

The 25-year-old has been part of The Hoops’ first-team squad for the last four years but made more appearances in the last year (55) than ever before. Not only that, McGregor enjoyed the most prolific scoring season in Celtic colours too, notching an impressive 12 in all competitions.

McGregor is a man for the big occasion. He scored against Rangers, netted two stunners in a thriller with Hibernian and also blasted home the winner in a Europa League clash with Zenit St Petersburg. Did we mention the opener in the Scottish Cup final?

Despite all this, however, the three-time Scotland international has never really been seen as a permanent fixture of Celtic’s starting XI. But that could all change with the 2018/19 season set to begin.

There is certainly a more regular space in the midfield beckoning after Stuart Armstrong left for Southampton in the summer. And with Brendan Rodgers seemingly content to wait until January before signing John McGinn, according to the Daily Record, McGregor has a chance to establish himself over the next few months.

Should he do just that, there is no guarantee that McGinn would be a starter if, or indeed when, he does arrive.

This could be McGregor’s time to shine.
