Southampton were one of a number of Premier League sides linked with Porto’s Primeira Liga striker Moussa Marega in the summer transfer window.

Moussa Marega did not got his move to the Premier League after all. Porto refused to let their star striker leave for a penny less than his £36 million release clause and, as a result, Sapo Deporto claims that the player was left very frustrated at being denied a dream switch to England.
Although it is interesting to note that a couple of clubs who were interested in Marega over the summer sent scouts to Porto’s opening game of their Primeira Liga title defence on Saturday.
According to Record, Southampton were in attendance as Porto thrashed Chaves 5-0 at the Dragao. This comes after the Mirror claimed that they were very interested in signing the 27-year-old Mali international centre-forward.
The transfer window might be shut for Premier League clubs but there is no reason why Southampton would not be preparing for January already. After all, the Saints averaged less than a goal a game last season and signed only one striker all summer.

And Danny Ings, who has arrived on loan from Liverpool, has scored just four goals in three injury-hit league seasons.
Should Southampton find themselves struggling to score again – and the opening day stalemate with Burnley suggests history could repeat itself – Marega would be an excellent option. He scored 22 goals in 29 league games last season.
Unfortunately, Marega did not feature in Porto’s 5-0 win with coach Sergio Conceicao allegedly concerned about this commitment, according to Sapo Desporto. But the Saints could do worse than make their interest known.
