Callum McGregor has been a key player for Scottish Premiership champions Celtic under Brendan Rodgers, who has been linked with the Aston Villa job.
Callum McGregor is hoping that Brendan Rodgers remains at Parkhead and that is no surprise.
Since the current Celtic manager took over in Glasgow two years ago, McGregor has been transformed from a promising squad player into one of the first names on the Hoops’ team-sheet.
The Scotland international has made 20 appearances in all competitions already this season after scoring 12 goals in 55 games in 2017/18.
And McGregor has now opened up to Sky Sports about reports suggesting Rodgers is one of the top managerial targets for Aston Villa.
“You want a top manager running your team for as long as you can,” McGregor said.
“For everybody at Celtic, be it fans or players, we want him to stay and we hope he does.”
The signs suggest that McGregor’s wish could be about to come true. Rodgers’ links with Aston Villa have dried up slightly in recent days after the former Liverpool boss stated at the weekend that he was still happy with life in Scotland, as reported by the BBC.
And, according to The Mirror, Aston Villa have now turned to Rui Faria with Jose Mourinho’s long-serving assistant set to take over from Steve Bruce in the Second City with John Terry likely to be appointed as his number two.
This is excellent news, then, for McGregor, whose place in Celtic’s starting XI looks safe as long as Rodgers sticks around.
