Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are reportedly keen to sign goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on loan from Premier League strugglers Newcastle United.
Craig Gordon is 35 this season and, although he is still a fine goalkeeper, it makes sense that Celtic would be planning for the future.
According to the Chronicle, Celtic have recently sent scouts to watch Newcastle United’s World Cup U20 winner Freddie Woodman, with the youngster’s future at St James’ Park uncertain. The report claims that Woodman’s contract is due to expire next summer and the Magpies have failed to tie him down as of yet.
Interestingly, Celtic wanted to sign the 21-year-old in January before he moved on loan to Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen. So manager Brendan Rodgers obviously feels that Woodman is a potential star of the future.
Reports over in Portugal seem to be good news for Celtic’s hopes of bringing the former Don to Parkhead in 2019.
Record claims that Newcastle have scouted Benfica’s highly-rated German goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachomidos, who joined from Panathiniakos this summer on a five-year deal.
On paper, it seems the promising 24-year-old would be a ready-made replacement for fellow youngster Woodman on Tyneside.
With Woodman’s contract running down Newcastle are somewhat powerless, and their sudden alleged interest in Vlachomidos suggests they are already planning for the England prospect’s departure.
Good news, then, for Celtic.
