Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers were keen to sign Aleksandar Mitrovic before he swapped Newcastle United for Fulham.
Before Benik Afobe returned to Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan from Bournemouth in January, Nuno Espirito Santo was considering a number of options to enhance his forward line.
And one of those was Aleksandar Mitrovic. Newcastle United were keen to sell the out-of-favour Serbian striker for about £15 million and The Chronicle reported that Wolves had shown an interest, before turning their attention to alternative options.
Now, Afobe has scored four goals in four starts back at Wolves and the Black Country side are cruising to promotion so all is very much well at Molineux right now.
But it is worth pointing out that a player Wolves eventually snubbed at the turn of the year has become arguably the Championship’s standout January signing.
Mitrovic has been nothing short of a revelation at Fulham with his winning goal in the 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday his ninth in 10 starts for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side. As it stands, Fulham are the favourites to go up in the play-offs and join Wolves in the Premier League – and much of that is down to Mitrovic.
Wolves have not made too many mistakes in the transfer market this season and Afobe has scored some important goals en route to a seemingly inevitable title win.
But just imagine how fearsome their attack would look with Mitrovic leading the line.
